With photography a huge passion in my life, I have always thought that my kids would have the best photo albums of all their friends. Their pictures would rock- they’d all be in focus, perfectly composed and exposed, their own little life displayed as a work of art.
Well, Jess and I got to talking today and we realized- we are totally lacking on taking pictures of the everyday things. There are so many times I go to take a picture but realize the lighting is poor and I’d have to use my flash, and because of that (I *HATE* pictures using the flash) I end up not taking the picture at all. And so many times I take pictures of Porter and I get up close and personal… which is great to capture those little details- his chubby little hands, his long eyelashes, his pointy little chin… but what about the big picture? What about his environment? His surroundings? The house he lives in? His room? His yard? In my attempts to capture "picture perfect" moments I am in reality leaving out the big details- the details of his life.
Photographers kids really do miss out.
I just notice so much lately that the only time I take out my camera is to set up a perfect photo environment… near great lighting, a clean cute kid in his diaper or neutral clothing, surrouded by a clutter free area…. and I have noticed that I don’t take pictures of his everyday little things.
So, I am challenging myself to let loose…. throw caution into the wind. Bust out the camera even when the lighting sucks and I have to use my flash. Take pictures of those little moments, those little smiles and faces that I would otherwise miss because I’m too anal about my pictures. I’m going to do it. One photo at a time.
I did good today… I took lots of pictures. I even used my flash (cringe). But I know in the future I’ll look back and be glad I took those pictures, no matter how sucky or blurry they are. Now, this is going to really hurt my bookshelves. I have enough problems with too many pictures when I only send the "good" ones to the lab. I’m scared to think of how many I’m going to end up with now…
Here are a few from today.
(1st photo: Zoey was licking his feet. 2nd photo: I needed to do my hair real quick… the basket kept him contained for a moment)
(these bath pictures were taken at my moms- she’s remodeling her house- hence the new window with no trim yet)

You know you’ve got a point there – I’ll have to keep that in mind one day when I have kids… LOL… love the pics from today – they are very fun and you will be happy you took them!!!
I love the bath pictures! Too stinkin cute!
i never would have thought of that, but you do have a great point. isn’t it so fun to look back at pictures when we were kids and see other people who were there, or remember that favorite toy, or grampa’s favorite chair in the background. sometimes those background details are just as important for memories as the subject in the pics.
i do have to say that your perfect lighting/ neat & clean/ serious or happy adorable baby pictures are amazing too!! just don’t forget about real life! it can be just as adorable…
now lets see a few of this kid eating!
YAY, Nic! Love ’em all!!!
These are SOO Cute Nic!!! You are so right
