At a loss with what to do with the cat…

Ok, I know I’m going to sound like a horrible pet owner.  Honestly, I love my dogs and I used to love this stupid cat.  He is about 11 years old now.  I’ve had him since he was a kitten.  Last year he started peeing in the house, on the couch (our old one, lucky for him- he wouldn’t be alive if it were our new one) everywhere.  So, for the last year he’s lived in a huge 4′ x 3′ x 3′ dog kennel in the basement.  About 2 weeks ago I let him out of the crate, trying to be nice and let him roam the house.  He peed in the guest room.  So, he is now banned to the crate forever.  I just don’t know what to do with him.  Its horrible that he has to live in this crate, but no way am I going to have him peeing all over my house.  It stinks.  YUCK.  So, Ryan and I were thinking of having him put to sleep, horrible and mean, yes, but he’s getting old.  He’s grumpy. Hates kids, doesn’t like other pets much.  Who would want to adopt him, especially when he pees in the house?  I mean, the asshole knows where his litter box is.  THen we thought maybe we’ll take him to the Humane Society where they’ll adopt him, but then again who would want a cat who pees in the house and isn’t very friendly?  My friend, Barbie, has horses and a barn.  I aske her if we could take him there, but he is front declawed, her dog kills cats, and she has another male cat that will probably fight with Bailey. Bailey has always been an indoor cat, but last summer we tried to keep him outside (b/c the peeing) and he got a cut on his eye that abcessed and cost a ton of money, so no more outside for him.  I just don’t know what to do.  What would you all do?  Kristi, I know you have cats- what would you do in this situation???

  1. I know EXACTLY how you feel. My cat is 17 years old and started peeing on everything about 2 months ago. We put him outside and after a couple of weeks of freaking out, he seems to be doing fine now. He has front claws though, so at least he’s able to protect himself.

I would maybe call your vet and see what he/she recommends. I have heard that a lot of cats get kidney problems when they get older which could be the cause of the peeing. He might even recommend putting him down. Good luck with your decision. I know how hard it is.

  2. Nic,
You definitely should bring the cat to the vet to see what she says. You’ll feel better about making an informed decision after you get the facts. I know that the vet costs $$, but maybe you won’t need to get many tests done..It could be a simple medication to fix it. Or Chances are the Vet may recommend that you put the cat down? 😦 You also have to consider that the cat isn’t good around kids either. Thats a big flag when planning a family!! Living his life in a dog kennel isn’t the best option either. Go to the Vet and let us know!! This is a crappy situation, hun. Hope it works out okay.

  3. Nic: I think it’s time to let Bailey rest in peace. He sure isn’t having any life in the crate and doesn’t want to be around your other pets and people. You would really feel bad if he badly bit someone or the dogs.

  4. We had our cat for 18 years, my sweet kitty. He was doing the same thing, peeing on the carpet. We brought him to the vet and they told us that he probably just couldn’t control it anymore due to old age. He was suffering so we ended up putting him to sleep. He had lived a pretty full life 🙂 Hope you are able to find a solution you are commfortable with, losing pets is tough 😦
