fingerprinted

I am on my way to being registered to substitute teach.  Makes me sad that I’ve worked so hard for my degree and I will probably end up just subbing this fall.  My friend, Katie, graduated about 2 years ago and has subbed since then.  She said every school she’s subbed in has only hired their subs when a teaching postion opened up.  (for example- JPS had 10 teaching positions open last year, and all were filled with people who had subbed for awhile in their district).  I’m going to be subbing the last week of May and the first two weeks of June in the 2nd grade class that I student taught in.  G is having a baby- and is having a scheduled c-section on May 22.  So, I’m taking over the afternoons for the last 3 weeks of school.  I’m really excited to see the kids again, and I think that it’ll go over pretty well since I’ve already been their teacher for part of the year.

Back to what I was saying- I turned in my sub application today and went to get fingerprinted.  I should be registered within the next 2 weeks.  If I don’t get a teaching position this fall, I’m just going to substitute.  Hopefully it’ll get my foot in the door and I will be available if a position opens up.  At first I was a little irritated at the idea of having to sub full-time. Subs don’t make very much money, and after we pay for daycare I’d barely bring home anything.  We’ve always planned on our kids going to daycare, but that was because I’d figured I’d get a full time position and make enough money.  But according to people in the school districts around here, subbing is pretty much the only way at having a chance at a teaching position.  My grandma offered to watch Porter a day or two a week this fall, so that will actually help out a ton and it’ll boost my paycheck a little by only having to put him in daycare 3 or 4 days a week.  I wish subs around here got paid what they do where Kristi lives… they make $105/day there.  Here- the max is $85/day, in a select few districts.  Most schools pay between $70/$75 a day.  Big yuck when daycare is $28/day!

  1. I have to say when I was working at Northwest, that is exactly how they hired. They hired the subs-NEVER anyone from outside. And it is a shame that the pay is so low considering I made more than that in the kitchen. Oh SO WRONG!

  2. Subs need to get paid so much more for what they do, especially when you have a degree in teaching. Hopefully it will lead to a full time teaching opportunity for you.

  3. It just makes me sick, Nic. What does that average out to be? $12/hour? Without benefits?! Subs are extremely important and they need to be very good…they deserve more pay!!

  4. That stinks that you won’t be able to get a job without subbing! Come down here to South Florida – they are practically begging for teachers! Have fun subbing in that 2nd grade classroom – I just LOVE 2nd grade!
