I might have just been destined to be Mary Poppins…

At this rate I’m never going to have a "real" job.

Here’s the scoop.

I was at school today and someone in the district sent around an email about needing a nanny for 2 two year olds and a 10 month old for the upcoming school year.

I thought about it for a minute… and thought- that would be PERFECT!  I could stay home with Porter, still have the same school year schedule, and make more money than subbing!

So I emailed her back, explained my specifics/qualification etc and she said she was looking forward to hearing from me.  I waited for her to call me this evening.

Turns out she has a 2 year old and 10 month old (will be 10mo this fall) and their daycare person is moving up north.  Her friend has a 2 year old and the grandparents want to travel now so they can’t watch the kid.  So, they decided to go in together and hire a nanny.

She offered $400/week 8am-4pm, and I of course could bring Porter with me.  They live relatively close to my home, one just about 5 min away and the other just a tad further.  One week would be at one house, one week at the other (so neither house gets all the wear and tear from all the kids).  Both moms are teachers, the mom I talked to sounded so nice.  She seemed to have similar parenting values as I did also.

Originally I was nervous about this idea, thinking it might hurt my career to stay home for a year, but the more I think about it the more it makes sense.  If I were to sub I’d bring home half that after paying for daycare for Porter.   This opportunity gives me the chance to make DOUBLE the money AND be with Porter all the time.

I have to email her tomorrow and ask about school vacations/short weeks- make sure I would get paid for all that whether I work or not.  My aunt thinks I should go for $450.  What do you all think?  I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask, but I don’t want to seem too greedy.

I’ll keep you all updated.

  1. What a great opportunity to be able to be with Porter all day long and not even have to use your own home as the daycare! I can’t offer any advice on the offer – you should call around in your area and find out what’s the average cost for daycare. I would definately stay firm on the pay for holidays and half weeks! Good LUCK!

  2. Sounds like a great opportunity!! It couldn’t hurt to ask for $450. You never know…they may be more than willing to pay that with your qualifications.

  3. Well for a day home here it is $24.50 per day per child. For Daycare it is $625.00 a month per child over 18 months and $675.00 Under 18 months.
However you do have the added perk of having Porter with you.

  4. Sounds like a great deal- no advice on asking for more $$- Im a huge wimp when it comes to that!

  5. My son’s daycare center charges the following: $160 for an infant (under 12 months), $155 for a 1 year old above, $144 for a 2 year old, $139 for a 3 year old (my son’s in this age group).

    i’d definitely ask for more.
