Ghetto Grammar and the need for State issued birth-control

Yes, this will probably be a very controversial post, but like I’ve said in the past- this is my blog.  Don’t like it, don’t read it.

Why is it that people don’t see anything wrong with this sentence:

"I seen her last week"

or this sentence:

"I seen this new car I want to get"

I can not tell you how many times I’ve heard this type of sentence roll off of my sisters tongue.  And her friends tongues.  And I just recieved an email from someone (not stating who) who used this very same type of sentence.  It makes me cringe. I can’t understand how someone can say those words and not realize how horrible and uneducated it makes them sound.

"I SAW HER LAST WEEK"   "I SAW THIS NEW CAR I WANT TO GET"

Try those on, kids.

A new thing I think needs to happen
is birth control given out by the state alongside state aid.

I just caught wind of a girl who already has a one year old and is now pregnant again.  Not married.  Probably not the same father. And I’m 98% sure she lives in government subsidized housing and probably recieves WIC and other forms of state aid.  I bet I know why she’s knocked up again.  The mother only gets state insurance for their childs first year.  Hmm… seem like a coincidence that this girls child is just a year old and she’s now knocked up again?  Why should she care… its not going to cost her anything.  She’ll get aid to pay for her to have the kid.  And its food.  And her food for a year, and all their insurance.  And housing.  (Ok, I can’t be positive that this is this girls situation, but let me tell you, there are plenty that are in this same situation)

What the hell is wrong with our society.  Why is it ok for people who obviously can’t make it on their own, and support the "family" that they have to have more kids?

Why is it so easy for people to live this way?  For kids to be brought up in the slums this way?  Doesn’t anyone realize that these children are the spawn of the people who I hear speaking sentences like "I seen", and they themselves will grow up to speak those same words?

Sad.  So sad.  And frustrating.

Here we are, working our asses off, trying to get by- barely getting by, doing the right thing, trying to pay bills and make ends meet.  Most months ends don’t meet.  Actually, I hardly remember a time when ends met.  We don’t recieve any government assistance, we don’t even qualify for it.  But people can go and decide to get knocked up, knowing that if they have a kid they can easily get into government housing, recieve a ton of money for groceries and formula each month, but the people who do it right- get married, get a degree, get a house and have kids the right way suffer?

Oh that brings me to another sore spot… another knife in the back.

I have $45,000 in student loans. Its no secret.  I couldn’t afford college, but I couldn’t afford to not get a degree (which, now that I can’t find a full time teaching position, I’m wondering if that was the right career to choose….).  But anyway… how is it that these people living in government housing, having kids out of wedlock get their college paid for?  What the fuck is wrong with that?  Yet I never qualified for more than $1,000 a year of grants.  That, to me, is bullshit.  And let me tell you, that just eats at my gut.  I can’t stand thinking about how unfair that is.   Makes me wonder if I should have been an idiot and gotten knocked up in high school, moved into the ghetto, gotten FIA to pay for my kids daycare and went to school!

So that is the other topic of my post.  If you recieve any sort of aid from any organization… you should have to get your montly Depo Shot along with your aid.  End of story. It’d solve a lot of problems in this society.

Ok, I’m off my soapbox.  Just needed to vent a little.

  1. I totally agree!! I have had friends who have never got married, had babies and have still gotten their college degree because they had everything paid for for them.

When did the ‘right way’ become the ‘fool’s way’?? Hell, I could have had my kids, finished college and, as long as I didn’t marry, have it all paid for by the Govt!!

No one told ME this in high school…

  2. Nic, You took the words right out of my mouth about those damn student loans. I cannot stand our government. And yes, I do feel, as an English major, that society was not taught proper English. Here is one of my faves….

When people use the word “them” out of context….

For Example: I want them. You see them people. Damn it, have you heard of the word those or just the word the.

Drives me nuts. I am behind everything that you just vented. Now it’s time for me to update the ol’ blog!!!!

  3. OK…..so I know this girl…cough cough ME cough cough! And she had 2 kids out of wedlock with the same guy…OOPS!!! I find this topic to be true and untrue at the same time! My “friend”…see she had to be on WIC and Food Stamps….but she also worked a full time job and WAS NOT a slut! She needed the extra help. Granted there are STUPID sluts in the world who would rather live off of the government then get a real job….but my friend was not like that!

  4. PHEW>. that was a long post. but i HEAR you and feel the same way.. i work 50 hours a week (once i get back into full swing) and go to school full time.. i dont qualify for discounted ANYTHING.. and i work my butt off.. i am responsible.. but those who choose NOT to be responsible get rewarded?? wtf?
