Day of the Doctor

We’ve been to the doctor/hospital TWICE today… Porter had his 18 month appointment (although he just turned 17 months), and we also visited the ER this evening.

Lets start from the beginning.

Porter’s appointment:  all was well, he is doing great developmentally (cracks me up that she asks "So, he has about 4 words he can say?" I’m like "Uh… try like 40!!"), and height/weight wise also.  He was 22lbs (10th %) and 31 inches (25th %).  He had to have 4 shots, as we missed his 1 year appointment, didn’t make it in until he as 14 months, so we skipped his 15 month appointment and did a 17 month appt instead.  Interesting, huh.  So… he had to have his 15 month shots and his 18 month shots.  FUN.

Immediately as Sue the nurse walked in, he freaked out.  Sue is always the one to give him shots, and he obviously remembered her from 3 months ago.  He was crying and giving me the stuck out lip and reaching for MAMA!!  Awww…. Then Dr. Van Wagnen came in and he was ok with her, although he wanted to be held instead of sitting on the table.  Anytime we sat him on the table he flipped out.  When it was SHOT TIME we had to man-wrestle and pin him down.  It was like wrangling an alligator.   Sue said she hopes she’s not the one who has to give him his 5 year shots (because apparently that is the worst shot/age to give… yikes!  He’ll need to be strapped down!!)  Afterwards, he was all shaky and upset… I felt so bad for him!

Anyway, luckily we don’t have to go back until his 2 year appointment (TWO YEAR!!! Thats like a BIG KID!!).

So, back to my day.  This evening, after Leslie and Reyna’s session, I was playing with Porter outside on the slide and swing.  Ryan was dinking around the house, trying to get it ready for the showing we have in the morning.  All of a sudden I see him by the sliding glass door and he yells "I need you to get in here now!"  His face looked kind of funny.  I grab Porter and run inside, and he tells me he needs me to flush out his eye.  I’m like "What! What did you get in it?!"  BATTERY ACID.  Oh my word.  So I’m throwing water at his eyeball in the bathtub (ok, his eyeball was not IN the bathtub… you know what I mean) and then we decide to go to the ER, because, its like his EYE… and he kind of needs it to SEE things with.

This was at like 6:30pm.

We dropped Porter off with my mom and head to the ER.  We were there for FOUR FREAKING HOURS!!  We got right into a triage room and Ry got hooked up to the eye flushing machine.  Man, I wish I had taken my camera because that was so funny looking… it looked like an IV running right to his eyeball.  So, his eye got flushed, and then we sat and sat and sat and SAT AND SAT for ever and ever and ever and ever.  I finally, around 9pm, went to Arby’s to get us dinner.  We started to eat Arbys and then FINALLY got called back into an examining room.  We again sat there until about 10:15pm and then the doctor came in and looked in his eye with the slit machine (hmmm I can’t remember if thats the name…) and said that luckily he had his contact in and it saved his eye.  He got a little acid burn on the white part, but thats not a big deal.

What a great way to spend a Friday evening!  We joked on our way home that we had a "Great date night!  We got to eat out at Arby’s, my mom babysat, we had 4 hours out of the house…."  Too bad it was in the ER!!

  1. Oh man! What a day – nice work, Ryan LOL That is so something Brad would do. Men! Oh and don’t be dumb about the long distance – I don’t have the free thing anymore but I still have cheap US minutes!

  2. Meant to add, I’d love to see shorty and the tank together LOL M has 6 inches on P and 14lbs!! Holy crap, my kid is huge HAHA

  3. oh man, that totally sounds like my life! we are always in the ER for one thing or another…and my poor husband has been there not once but TWICE for corneal scratches caused by a kicking and screaming 2-year old! 🙂 Good luck with the rest of the weekend, try to keep it low-key!
